Whale Tale Whisky
Our whisky was distilled in May 2018 in Scotland and brought down to age in South Africa. It was placed in bourbon casks and finished off with a combination of French and American oak, resulting in an incredibly smooth easy-drinking masterpiece. Our XO Potstill Cape Brandy was distilled in June 2014 and aged in French oak to provide a beautiful subtle sweetness followed by a smooth lingering finish. Whisky Story: Nestled in South Africa’s Eastern Cape, the birthplace of Nelson Mandela, lies the world-famous “Hole in the Wall.” Known as esiKhaleni by the Xhosa people, meaning “place of noise,” the “Hole in the Wall’ is a tidal island with a magnificent natural archway at its center. This colossal archway is believed by many to have been sculpted by ferocious waves created by whales in the local area. According to Xhosa folklore, the “Hole in the Wall” is far more than a geological wonder, it is revered as a sacred gateway to their ancestors. Much like the waves that shaped the “Hole in the Wall,” Whale Tale Whisky is crafted with patience and purpose. Sip slowly, and savour the stories that bind us across time and tide. Brandy Story: In the 1930s, the quiet fishing town of Hermanus in South Africa witnessed an extraordinary event in which a lone southern right whale, later named Wendy, became stranded on the town’s shore. The local community came together to guide her back to the ocean. Grateful for their kindness, Wendy returned each year from Antarctica to the same cove where she had been rescued, often with her calves by her side. Her visits became such a popular spectacle that it inspired the creation of the annual Hermanus Whale Festival, one of the world’s premier whale watching events. Much like Wendy’s return to Hermanus, Whale Tale Brandy is a tribute to the enduring bonds that stand the test of time. So raise a glass to her legacy and the stories that bring us closer.
